You do not need a teaching certificate.
You should have:

commitment to your volunteer activity
* Flexibility
* Reliability
*The willingness to complete two training
sessions:

workshop in the subject area in which you will tutor

During
orientation, you will...
*learn more about the literacy council
*see if this volunteer job is right for you
*discuss good tutoring practices
*sign forms, including a background check and a confidentiality agreement
After the orientation, you will
be asked to attend at least one of the following trainings. All trainings will be held at the literacy council office.
Teaching Basic Math Skills
Learn
how to tutor your student in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Reading System
These trainings will show you how to teach phonics
and beginning reading skills to an adult or child.
Tutoring Reading Comprehension
Learn how to introduce your student to better vocabulary, pre-reading and reading comprehension skills.
Teaching English as a Second Language
Our ESL students come to Arkansas from all over the world. Learn how to teach one of these new Americans how
to speak, read and write English.
Becoming a Computer Tutor
Adults can receive help in beginning computer skills from their very own "computer
tutor." Lessons are limited to a maximum of 6 meetings. Skills taught include saving a document, turning
on and off a computer, navigating the web and keyboarding.
